Privacy Policy
Landlord Atlas is a static informational site operated by Landlord Atlas LLC, a Michigan limited liability company ("we," "us"). There are no accounts and no logins, and reading the site tells us nothing about who you are. You can choose to give us two things: an email address for the optional Law Alerts newsletter, and the details on a request for a state sample of the dataset. Both are described below. This page explains the little that does happen with data, in plain language.
What the site does not collect
- No accounts — the site has no login of any kind. The optional Law Alerts signup below is an email address, not an account.
- No cookies set by the site itself.
- No form submissions to us except the optional Law Alerts signup and the state sample request described below. The tools (calculators and letter generators) run entirely in your browser: every figure and letter is computed on your device from state-law data embedded in the page when the site was built. Anything you type — names, addresses, rent amounts, dates — is never transmitted to us or to anyone else. Copy and print actions happen locally too.
- No advertising networks, tracking pixels, or cross-site tracking.
- No selling or sharing of personal information — the newsletter list is never sold, shared, or used for anything but Law Alerts, and the state sample requests are never sold or shared.
What does exist
- The Law Alerts newsletter (optional). If you subscribe to Law Alerts, the email address you enter is sent by our own server to Beehiiv, the newsletter platform that hosts our list — no Beehiiv script, iframe, or pixel runs on this site, and we do not store or log your address on our side. Beehiiv holds the subscriber list on our behalf and records, alongside your address, which page of this site you signed up from and, if you chose any, the states you picked on the form; that is everything. Delivery and list storage are governed by Beehiiv's privacy policy. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe, which removes your address from the list.
- One browser preference. When you pick your state in a tool, that choice is saved in your browser's local storage so other tools remember it. It stays on your device, is never sent anywhere, and you can clear it any time through your browser settings.
- Aggregate analytics. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless service enabled through our host. It gives us aggregate counts — page views, referrers, and similar totals — without cookies, without tracking you across other sites, and without building individual profiles.
- Hosting infrastructure. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes standard request data (such as IP addresses) to deliver pages and protect against attacks. That processing is governed by Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Email you send us. If you email [email protected], we receive what you send and use it only to respond — for example, to handle a correction.
- Affiliate links. Some pages carry a clearly labeled recommendation for a landlord service (currently Hemlane, a property-management platform). Nothing about you is transmitted when a page loads. If you click a partner link — including the buy buttons for our paid documents, described below — the site counts that click: we record which page it happened on, which partner the link goes to, and the date. That tally is an aggregate number stored with our host (Cloudflare); it contains no cookies, no IP addresses, and no information about who you are, and we use it only to learn which pages are useful. The link itself tells the partner only that the visit came from Landlord Atlas; if you subscribe or purchase there, we earn a commission. Once you are on the partner's site, their own privacy policy governs.
- State sample requests. If you ask for a state sample on the dataset page, we keep what you enter on the form: your work email, your organization, the state you chose and, if you gave them, your role and what you are evaluating the data for. With it we keep the date, the dataset release that was live, and how many times the file was downloaded. The request is stored in our own database with our host (Cloudflare), with no cookies and no IP address. We use it to deliver the file, to understand who is evaluating the dataset, and we may email you about the dataset. A request does not subscribe you to Law Alerts. To have your request deleted, email [email protected].
- Dataset file links. If you click a link to one of the public files on the dataset page (the manifest, the changelog or a schema), the site counts that click the same way as a partner link: which page it happened on, which file the link goes to, and the date — an aggregate tally with no cookies, no IP addresses, and no information about who you are.
- Purchases happen on Etsy. Our paid documents — the Landlord Operations Bundle and the state landlord kits — are sold through our Etsy shop. Every buy button is a plain link to Etsy, our checkout provider — this site embeds no commerce scripts and never sees your payment details. Checkout is governed by Etsy's privacy policy. Etsy shows us only what is needed to fulfil the order, such as the name and email address on it.
- The data license is ordered by email. A license for the dataset is ordered by email and paid by invoice. We keep what the order needs: the organization, the contact and billing details you send, and the license dates. We use them only to deliver the license, to support it, and to send a renewal note before it ends. This site takes no payment and never sees payment details.
- The licensed feed. When a license holder requests a file under
/data/current/, the license key they send is compared with our own list of issued keys and is not stored with the request. That list holds a fingerprint of each key, never the key itself, beside the organization and contact email on the order and the license dates. We count feed requests the same way as file-link clicks: which file, and the date, as an aggregate tally with no cookies, no IP addresses, and no information about who you are.
